01-07-21: How to better embrace change by thinking differently

Sent 1/7/2021

Today's Think Better Newsletter is about embracing change.

The Idea

Better necessarily implies different.

When most people read this, they immediately think of "different" as meaning "doing a different activity." And it can mean that. But it doesn't have to.

Here are three simple ways to think about doing the same thing, but differently:

1. Do it more efficiently. Can you do the same activity in less time, or with less energy? If so, you're doing it differently and, potentially, better.

2. Do it more effectively. This basically means to do it with more care, to get a higher quality output. Can you take more time, focus more, or put more energy into it?

3. Do it with different emphasis. Pick one part and put a little more effort than usual into it. The overall activity may be the same, but your attention and effort can be tweaked to see what happens.

If you are actively training, any of the above can help you do the exact same workouts and get a different result. And the same is true for other areas of your life.

I cover these in detail in Chapter 3 of Make the Leap, and I'll cover all of these ideas on this newsletter over time.

The System

Here's my simple system for embracing change:

Take a moment to ask a simple question: why do I do it this way?

You will be surprised how often the only answer is, "because I do" or "because that's the way it's always been done."

The more you get comfortable asking this question, the easier it becomes to make those small changes. And enough small changes can be transformational over time.

The Question

We all want to be better, but how different are you willing to be?
